How to Create an Outdoor Cooking Area

For many of us, our gardens are an extension of our home. And this means that when the weather is kind to us, eating al fresco is a real treat. There’s a trend at the moment towards creating an outdoor cooking area and it’s easy to see why; having a dedicated space to eat, prepare food and store drinks is much more pleasant than having to trample backwards and forwards from the house.

It doesn’t need to be fancy, either. You can make your outdoor cooking area as simple or sophisticated as you want or need it to be. Here are a few ways to aid your al fresco dining, to a greater or lesser extent, with a dedicated outdoor cooking area.

Sitting Comfortably

The most important aspect of an outdoor eating area is the seating. It’s worth choosing a decent outdoor table and chairs which is hardwearing and will last more than a few seasons. You may also wish to invest in a large parasol or awning if your garden is a sun trap.

Why not install a patio or a decking area which will become the space where you can entertain from? Even just having a dedicated space for entertaining will make it a more enjoyable experience.

Cooking Herbs? Cocktail Herbs!

A simple and slightly quirky touch for an outdoor cooking area is a herb garden. Of course, these are perfect for meal preparation, and normally would be located just outside the property’s kitchen door.

But if you locate it by your outdoor dining area? Then it becomes your cocktail herb garden! A mini herb garden planted in pots or raised borders is great for any budding mixologist. Include fresh mint for your mojitos and Pimms, rosemary for your gin and tonic and basil for tequila and gin vodka based cocktails!

Imagine snipping your own fresh herbs to garnish your drinks, as your guests sit in splendour in your al fresco dining space?! It’s the perfect midsummer night’s dream!

Fire Things Up

Of course, if you’re going to be serious about an outdoor cooking area, then you need something to actually cook with. In years gone by, this would have been your standard barbeque. And there’s nothing wrong with one of those, especially if you’re king of the grill! You could, however, have a permanent brick barbeque installed as part of your garden landscaping.

If you want something a little more contemporary, how about a wood fired oven? They’re great for cooking pizzas and slow roasting meats!

Keep your Cool

Did you know, you can have fridges installed outdoors? Well you can, and you can have them installed as part of your garden landscaping in an undercover area within your garden. Alternatively, why not have some troughs installed as permanent ice buckets?!

If any of this has whetted your appetite, then speak to D&G Garden World.
